Horticulture and Landscaping

HORTICULTURE AND LANDSCAPING Grades: 10, 11, 12; 1 Term, Ability = All
 
Students in the class will study many areas of the horticulture industry ranging from indoor green plants to outdoor plants used in the landscape. Students will study plant reproduction and learn plant growth processes by completing a variety of hands-on lab activities on trees, house plants, and common outdoor plants.  Students will perform a number of experiments applying concepts in genetics, the use of growth regulators, and environmental factors affecting plant growth. Students will construct holiday evergreen projects, do plant decoration projects, and build dish gardens as part of the class. During the second half of this class students will work on outdoor landscape related projects. Students will learn identification of common trees, shrubs, and flowering plants that can be used in the outdoor landscape. Students will design and draw landscape plans, using computerized software, for a new home in Foley and have the opportunity to perform some of the installation work to learn the principles of landscaping around the home. Field trips to local homes will provide students with a chance to learn how to maintain the landscape by doing pruning and grafting work on trees and shrubs. Students will work with seeding and care of the home lawn including using pesticides on lawns, applying fertilizer, and maintenance of lawn mowing equipment. Throughout the class, students will have the opportunity to explore many of the career possibilities available in many of the horticulture fields.
