Applied Animal Science

APPLIED ANIMAL SCIENCE Grades: 10, 11, 12; 1 Term, Ability = All
 
This course is designed to give students a chance to learn a variety of knowledge related to many animals used in our world not only in agriculture but in our everyday life. Students will study scientific background of how improvements were made in producing our high quality animals being raised today.  Scientific selection methods of animals will be studied along with animal genetics and animal growth. Students will study nutrition by performing analysis lab experiments on feedstuffs and balancing a ration for the animal. Basic veterinary principles used in the animal industry will be demonstrated both in the classroom and at the veterinary clinic. Students will study basic animal systems, parasites and diseases, and animal health by growing and raising birds during part of the class. In addition, students will look at the consumer related side of animal science looking at meat science and modern day processing of animals in our world. Students will cover special areas such as animal welfare, consumer concerns of ag production, and technology used in the industry. Alternative animal agriculture topics such as aquaculture, race horse, baitfish, and mink production topics will be discussed. Students will be involved with many hands on learning activities in the classroom and conduct a number of working experiments during the class such as hatching chicken and quail, performing growth studies on birds, and growing mealworms.
