Art Studio Policies
1. Respect yourself and your opportunity to learn.
What is life? It is the flash of a firefly in the night. It is the breath of the buffalo in the winter time. It is the little shadow which runs across the grass and loses itself in the Sunset.
-Crowfoot from his final hours in 1890
a. Be here, prepared and on time for class.
b. Be attentive and on task for the entire hour. We only get 72 hours together!
c. You are responsible for completing work within a reasonable timeframe. You may come to the art room during other class periods if you are using your class time wisely, provided you don’t interrupt the other classes! You must have a pre-signed pass to do this.
2. Respect others and their opportunity to learn.
If we cannot end now our differences, at least we can help make the world safe for diversity.
-John F. Kennedy
We have become not a melting pot but a beautiful mosaic. Different people, different beliefs, different yearnings, different hopes, different dreams.
-Jimmy Carter
a. Use good manners! We all benefit from the practice.
b. Tolerance, understanding and celebration of your peers: these are the best ways to encourage creativity.
c. Leave the situation better than you found it. Clean up, organize and improve your learning environment whenever possible, and definitely when it is required… like at clean up time.
d. The radio, television, computers and white board are off limits unless you have permission.
3. Respect all living things.
4. Respect all the “stuff” around you, value what it can do for you or what it may do for someone else.
“If I have seen a little further it is by standing on the shoulders of Giants."
-Sir IsaacNewton from John of Slisberry
a. There are amazing histories that have conspired to create the classroom that you see here. It takes 1 million liters of water to produce one computer! Instead of breaking the drawing pencil, let’s try drawing with it…
b. You will be charged with a crime if you steal or break studio equipment. You will be required to repair or replace items that you damage; this is your personal liability. Example: Pencils are $1.00 , erasures are .50¢, litho stones $2000…
c. If you don’t know what it is, what it’s used for, or if you don’t need it to finish your assignment, don’t touch it!
d. Students aren’t allowed in the supply rooms or the office area without permission.
e. Don’t touch other people’s artwork without permission! If you damage or destroy someone else’s artwork I will kick you out of class for the rest of the semester and you will most likely fail.
5. Other Studio Business
a. Mr. Carlson’s pet peeves are…
- Lining up at the door
- Talking while I’m trying to teach
- Texting lol!
- Not cleaning up as required
- Apathy
- Sitting on my tables
b. Seating will be assigned; all work must be completed in your assigned area during normal working conditions.
c. Only two artists at a table, three artists on the two end tables.
d. Water is allowed, food, other beverages, personal media devices and cell phones are not. After your first warning your device will be forfeited to the “basket of shame” where you can pick it up at the end of class, the school is not responsible for lost or stolen items. Chronic abusers will have their devices sent to the office per district policy, and their phone records/texts will be checked.
e. There is a $1.00 fine for swearing, chronic profanity will result in additional discipline.
f. Passes are needed for bathroom breaks and trips to your locker.
g. Art fees: Students will be responsible to pay for projects made with school materials other than plain paper if you want to take them home. The fees are $10 for all classes save Technical Images which is $20. 10 points of extra credit are available for students who pay in the first week of the semester. Payments can be made on-line or tot the high school office. See me if you have financial hardships for an alternative payment plan.
h. Students who use their time wisely are invited to the art room during their study hall to continue working on their projects.
i. Extra credit is available for those who listen!
Art Grading
1. Due dates will be established for most projects. Work turned in after the due date may not be given full credit.
2. At the end of the semester participation credit will become approximately 10% of the student’s total grade (see rules above). The majority of the grade will be based upon project work with some emphasis on quizzes and homework.
3. Each student will be allowed two absences per semester before participation credit will be lost. Absences due to school activities will not count towards these, check to see that I have recorded them correctly! Participation points will be lost for ISS and unexcused absences.
4. Incompletes must be made up within 10 days following the distribution of report cards. If the work is not made up the grade will be calculated “as is” and an “F” will be given if that is the grade that is earned.
5. Grades are based upon the following percentages:
A= 90-100% of total points
B= 80-89%
C=70-79%
D=60-69%
F=59% or less.
6. Any questions or comments can be directed to Mr. Carlson directly, over e-mail or by phone at 968-8441.
