AGRICULTURE MECHANICS AND ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGY Grades: 11-12; 1 Term, Prerequisite=Physical Science, Ability=All

uwz_oqyc[1] This course has been approved for 1 science physics credit.
This course is designed to teach students concepts of applied physics through the use of a variety of mechanics related lab and shop activities. Students will study laws of force and energy using hydraulic, tractor, and small engine power lab activities. Measuring torque and calculating output horsepower of equipment will be done in these units. Applications of labs in alternative energy such as solar and wind energy will be used in the class. Students will design and fabricate wood and metal structural projects using engineering processes. Students will perform stress and strength tests on their designs and develop a better understanding of how engineering tests are used in construction. Time will be spent doing velocity and speed  lab measurements and calculations using equipment in the field. Students will study concepts of electrical energy by applying these to electric motors, solenoid controls, sensing equipment, and various types of semiconductors used in agriculture or industry. Laws of thermal heating and cooling will be studying using applied labs in structural insulation and in cooling and use of ventilation systems.  In this course students will be required to complete mathematical calculations to solve problems related to mechanics labs and be able to write up lab report summaries for many of the class projects in order to meet the science requirements.
