Introduction to Agriculture

INTRODUCTION TO AGRICULTURE Grade: 9, 10; 1 Term, Ability = All
 
This class is designed to introduce students to the wide variety of areas in Agriculture. Students will explore areas in the production and processing of animal and food crops in which students will judge and evaluate animals used for meat and milk production and be able to identify and grade crops used for food. Students will work on units in ag mechanics working in the shop performing skills such as calculating a bill of materials for a project, using hand and power tools, constructing a small project, and understanding safe operations of agricultural and horticultural equipment. Students will explore the many possible careers in agriculture by having a chance to set up a cooperative work experience where the student will work on his or her own project outside of school. Students will be introduced to the management of ag natural resources including land and water. Students will take field trips to local land areas to sample soil, look at conservation practices, and determine the best uses for the land. Students will work on units in horticulture which deal with home landscaping and gardening. Students will plant trees and grow houseplants in class. Students will be introduced to the activities of the FFA Organization which include leadership development and conducting a simple business meeting using parliamentary procedure. The students will work with setting up basic records for an agribusiness and learn how to use the computer for recordkeeping.
