SMALL GASOLINE ENGINES Grades:  9, 10, 11, 12; 1 Term, Ability = All

This course is designed to give students an in-depth study of small engines such as lawnmowers, cycles, chainsaws, and outboard engines. General tools, use of service manuals, and shop safety will be covered throughout the entire course. Students will spend time in the classroom studying engine theory and the different components of engines and the procedures for servicing and troubleshooting engine problems. Students will then apply these skills by working on a variety of engines in the lab. Students will learn routine maintenance of power equipment and will service their own equipment. Students will perform an entire overhaul or reconditioning on a small engine in this class. Units in DC electrical systems, fuel injection, carburetor theory and electronic ignition will be studied. Students will complete repair estimates for equipment using laptop computers and make those repairs to simulate the work of a service technician. Students will work on a variety of Briggs and Stratton, Honda, Kohler, and Stihl engines throughout the class. Additional skills in soldering, marine repairs, and aluminum welding will be demonstrated and performed throughout the class.
