Language Arts 10

LANGUAGE ARTS 10 Grade: 10; 2 Terms, Required
The literature units in LA 10 will include short stories, a graphic novel, and an extensive unit on Shakespeare’s Hamlet. Second semester literature selections will include the Holocaust memoir, Night, Alan Gratz's Refugee and nonfiction texts will be incorporated throughout. There will also be a heavy focus on choice novels throughout the year in order to build reading speed, comprehension, and provide access to different genres of books. We will also complete a reading review unit in preparation for the MCA reading test in the spring. The writing component will focus on various small assignments throughout the year and a few multi-draft, larger assignments: literary analysis, comparative analysis, and research writing. The sentence skills will include parts of sentences, clauses and phrases, and complete sentences. Vocabulary and speaking skills will also be practiced. The speech will be a collaborative assignment between language arts and social studies. To fulfill the viewing component we will be analyzing a few films from history including a silent film, an action/adventure film, and a western.
 
ADVANCED LANGUAGE ARTS 10 Grade: 10; 2 Terms, Required
This is an advanced course that will allow students to work at quicker pace and also look at specific topics in greater detail. This course is designed to help you create a strong foundation in post-secondary skills. The literature component will include Shakespeare’s Hamlet, the Holocaust memoir Night, the non-fiction piece Ordinary Men, Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, and an extensive short story unit. There will also be a heavy focus on choice novels throughout the year in order to build reading speed, comprehension, and provide access to different genres of books. The focus of writing assignments will be on critical analysis. We will use our writing assignments to decipher how authors use literary elements to effectively write their stories. On top of several critical analysis assignments, students will also complete research writing assignments. Students will also be required to complete weekly vocabulary units, complete one formal speech during the year, and participate in a formal debate. Students will also participate in a historical film unit. Students will complete an ACT preparation unit where testing strategies will be practiced as well.
