Ceramics and Sculpture (500pts goal)

1. Unit #1 Forming Techniques (380 pts possible)
Ceramics Sculptor s use a variety of forming techniques when making their pieces, you could say there are as many techniques as there are artists. But these 5 techniques are at the core of the discipline:
A. pinching
assignment: five pinch pots (25pts)
reading/homework: Just Another Mug by Mark Hewit (25 pts)
resources: Finding One’s Way with Clay Paulus Berensohn
B. coiling
assignment: 10” coil pot (25 pts)
reading/homework: Svend Bayer by Mark Hewit (25 pts)
C. slab
assignments: slab spirit houses/fairy houses/ or storage jars (25 pts)
slab masks (15 pts)
reading/homework: Critical Care, the Art of Self Critique
by Simon Levin (25 pts)
D. molding
assignment: set of 5 drape or press molded plates (25 pts)
E. throwing
assignments: centering (10 pts) bowls (15 pts) cups (15 pts)
Plates (15 pts) larger pieces (25 pts each)
F. slip casting
assignments: mold making (10 pts) cast series of pieces (5 pts each) cast sculpture (50 pts)
2. Surface Treatments
There are also many surface decoration techniques, and you will be required to try some of them. Failure to incorporate these techniques in your designs will result in a reduction of your grade (-55 pts total). Techniques will be explained throughout the semester.

A. 100 Bricks per student (100 pts)
B. Pizza Oven (50 pts)
5. Sculpture (125 pts possible)
A. Head Study/Portraiture (50 pts)
B. Trompe ‘l oeil (25 pts)
C. Other (50 pts)
6. Whistles (points possible)
A. Whistles (25 pts)
B. Flutes (25 pts)
7. Clean Up(-100 points possible)
Teach student is responsible for clean up duties as assigned by the teacher. Students will loose points for not taking care of their duties. Additional disciplinary actions will be taken as needed.
8. Differentiation
At any time a student can request the option of earning points through other avenues. Some examples include: community service, research, presentations…
