Choir Grading Philosophy
Choir Grading System
Realizing our goals and expectations, the grading scale is both logical and fair. Choir is a group of singers working together with other singers to make music. The grade on your report card says “choir” not “singer.” Your grade is not just an assessment of your singing skills, but also a reflection of your accomplishments and contributions as a choir member. Grades will be calculated from the three following components:
1. Daily points: (Attendance/Participation -5 pts/day)
• Think of your daily rehearsal points as your daily assignment (attendance in class…on time, demonstrate good posture, have materials ready, participate in all choral classroom learning activities, follow classroom rules in regards to talking, behavior, gum, all of the issues addressed in the Rehearsal Expectations part of your choir handbook)
• Absences : Because choral singing depends on a “team effort” and because the majority of learning in choir is accomplished through classroom participation, absence from rehearsal is detrimental to your learning as well as to the learning of the whole choir. Points lost due to rehearsal absences should be made up by signing up for and completing a vocal lesson (15 minutes =worth up to 10 points). The make-up lesson is in addition to the required quarterly lesson for concert choir members. “Unexcused” absences are not eligible for make-up.
1. Concerts/Performances : (50 points per performance)
• For the success of the group, it is important that students make every effort to attend all mandatory performances. We do recognize, however, that there may absences due to certain circumstances.
Excused Absences:
a. Illness/Family Emergency : Parents/Guardians must contact the director ASAP. To restore credit: Students must sing the concert music from memory to the director the day following the concert. Credit will be restored provided the performance is of acceptable quality.
b. Other Commitment: Concert conflicts must be cleared through
parent/guardian contact with the director at least two weeks prior to
the concert through phone or written note. To restore credit: Student
will be required to sing the concert music from memory for the
director after school on the day following the concert. Credit will be
restored provided the performance is of acceptable quality.
Unexcused Absences:
This occurs when there is no valid reason for the absence. The student will
lose one letter grade and may lose the privilege of participation in the choir.
3. Required Quarterly Lesson: (20 points/ 30 minute lesson) Concert Choir ONLY
• Each student in Concert Choir is required to complete one individual or sectional lesson per quarter. Lesson times are available before and after school and periodically throughout the school day. I encourage you to plan ahead; lessons will not be given during the final week of the quarter.
